Horse Drawn Journeys - a new and exciting project

I am about to begin a very exciting project which will see myself and Fabric Lenny using a range of professional filmmaking techniques, digital media, new technologies and visual arts to capture the journey of a horse drawn canal boat traveling from Leeds to Saltaire, along the Leeds to Liverpool Canal. This is the first time in 60 years that a horse has pulled a canal boat along this stretch of canal and I am very excited to get the opportunity to document it and produce creative works in response to the journey and the canal environment. Whilst investigating the route last week I could not resist taking pictures on my iPhone and I thought I would share a few ahead of the project....keep checking back for more images and further information on the project and the exhibition of produced works.

Canal Artist Residency - more images

Lock Gates
I have recently captured some very interesting close ups from inside Hirst Lock as the water splashes through the gates as the lock fills up. Here are a few I have created as composite images....more to follow...

Open Lock
A composite image overlaying an extreme close up of water splashing through the locks, with a shot of an open lock gate. The overlaying creates an interesting watercolour effect which compliments the moving reflections experienced whilst traveling through the locks.

Through the Lock
Captured inside the lock, this is a composite image overlaying an extreme close up of water splashing through the locks, with a shot of a closed lock gate. I love the window in the lock, revealing the brightness on the other side of the lock gates and emphasizing the darkness within. The overlaying creates an interesting watercolour effect mirroring the shadows created by the sun shining on the splashing water, and casting shadows on the boats, the lock walls and the lock gates.

Lock Gates
Layered images of extreme close up shots of a lock gate and splashing water, creating an intriguing painterly effect, with unexpected colours and tones. I am really pleased with how these have turned out.

Canal Artist Residency - planning commences

Light & Dark - Reflections & Shadows
I am about to embark on an Artist's Residency based at Shipley, exploring the creative impact of Light and Dark along a short stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Following a recent planning day where I produced initial sketches and created a bank of exploratory and reference based photographic material I soon became intrigued by the patterns overlaying the canal and the canalside as a result of the bright sunlight shining through trees and shubbery and bouncing off boats and bridges, along with the decorative reflections of the sky and the surroundings in the water. It was at this point I decided to focus my creative interest specifically on reflections and shadows, under the overarching theme of Light and Dark, during my Residency. Here are a few images I produced during my planning trip.......there are much more to come so keep checking back!

Twist: The twisting bare branches of this bold, archaic tree is mimicked through the twisted photographic layers, dissolved together with subtle colour tones to suggest reflections from the canal

Beyond: An image created in response to the abundance of life, foliage and vibrancy beyond the canal. A layered image mixing black and white and full colour to create a misty palette of browns, greens and yellows.

Shipley Canal: Photographed at the side of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal near Hirst Lock capturing the radiant blue sky and the delicate white clouds, which together create a backdrop of brightness and colour against the lone tree on the hillside.
